Gorilla Glass Victus is the latest glass technology from Corning, designed to improve the protection of smartphones and other mobile products. Victus is the successor to Gorilla Glass 6. For well over a century, Corning's expertise have placed it a step above the rest with regard to glass science and its cutting-edge innovations. Even with the superiority of Gorilla Glass 6, the company had to come up with an upgraded product to meet the growing demand for even greater durability.

Broken or cracked screens are a common concern for anyone who owns or uses a mobile phone or any other tech device. Corning has cornered the market by providing superior strengthened glass for screens and created an enviable legacy in the glass technology industry. As compared to normal glass, Corning produces tempered, safety glass processed by controlled thermal and chemical treatments. This strength is achieved by chemically modifying the glass. Treating the glass in this manner has resulted in Corning leading the market and setting itself up as the industry standard for many smartphone brands.

Corning announced that its latest product, Gorilla Glass Victus, will deliver improved drop and scratch performance, compared to aluminosilicate glasses from its competitors. Technologists at Corning were not focused on improving one aspect when setting targets for Gorilla Glass Victus and instead, were directed to work on both drop and scratch protection. This improvement comes in light of increased consumer demand for more durability. Corning has stated that it didn't need to drastically change the formula or process to make Gorilla Glass Victus and thus, the cost incurred manufacturing the new version is nearly identical to Gorilla Glass 5.

The new and improved Gorilla Glass Victus did very well in lab tests and managed a drop performance of up to 2 meters when dropped on hard and rough surface planes. Repeated drop resistance has also been beefed up in the Corning Gorilla Glass Victus; the glass can survive an average of twenty one-meter drops. In comparison, Gorilla Glass 6 could only survive an average of fifteen drops from the same height. With regard to scratches, Gorilla Glass Victus is said to offer twice the level of scratch resistance compared to Gorilla Glass 6.

According to Corning, Samsung will be the first to make use of the new screen protection although a specific device was not mentioned. Regardless of which brand is first, it should be expected that a number of smartphones will start to be announced boasting the latest screen protection. In turn, this also should mean that new smartphones from Samsung, Google, and the rest, come with better drop and scratch protection than ever before.
